About Nevados de Chillán National Reserve

Nevados de Chillán National Reserve

Nevados de Chillán National Reserve is located within the Ñuble Region of central Chile and encompasses a dramatic landscape dominated by the Nevados de Chillán volcanic complex. This reserve features towering snow-capped stratovolcanoes, active geothermal zones with fumaroles and hot springs, volcanic cones, and dense native forests. The geography is varied, with rugged peaks reaching over 3,200 meters, volcanic craters, and glacial valleys. Ecologically, the area supports native Araucaria (monkey puzzle) forests and a range of Andean flora and fauna, including the Andean condor and the Chilean huemul deer. The reserve has a volcanic origin with active eruptions observed in recent decades, giving the region unique geothermal activity that attracts visitors seeking hot springs and volcanic landscapes. Visitors to Nevados de Chillán engage in hiking, mountain biking, skiing in winter, horseback riding, and wildlife observation. The ski resort located on the slopes of the volcano is one of the few in Chile offering both alpine and backcountry skiing opportunities. The reserve's geothermal springs provide relaxation and therapeutic benefits. There are several prominent volcanic landmarks, including Volcán Nevado and the Copahue Volcano near the Argentine border. The reserve’s remote access and high-altitude terrain appeal to adventurous outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Conservation efforts focus on protecting native species and managing tourism to preserve the fragile volcanic and forest ecosystems.
